Sunlit Woods

I am a freelance teacher of singing based in the Tyne Valley, Northumberland.

I work with individuals and can help you grow in confidence as you explore the possibilities of your voice.

Self-awareness, creativity, energy, stage-presence and story-telling are some of the areas I emphasize in lessons. Playful experiment with sounds and text allows you to explore. Together we improve listening ('hearing the desired sounds in your head'), pitch matching, articulation, tone and resonance.

I enjoy working with beginners and the terrified as well as my advanced students. I can help you with basic musicianship too.

My own favourite pieces include folksongs, Tudor songs and all kinds of Baroque works. I have a life long love of German language which opens the door to the many cantatas of Bach and Telemann. More recently I learned some Czech on duo-linguo and dipped into nineteenth century song.

Several of my students have taken Music Theatre to grade 8. I especially like the way they are allowed to choose their own (difficult) songs and to present them as if they are part of a show, costume and libretto included! I am happy to work with you on any genre or to work with many different kinds of music. I have helped a vicar to feel happier singing in church. A particular highlight of my work has been enabling a special needs student get a recital diploma in pop vocals.

You are encouraged to find repertoire that fits your voice and personality, challenging yet not overwhelming.
